Here’s the secret function of the glove box that most people ignore

Under the dashboard, on the passenger side to the right of the driver, there is the famous drawer commonly known as the “glove box”. Obviously, no one systematically puts on gloves. In reality, over time it has become a sort of “collection box” where the vehicle documents are kept, but also a list of personal objects. However, most motorists are probably not aware of its hidden function. Because actually this storage space has a very beneficial use in new vehicle models. Small lighting.

What can go in the glove compartment?

In the past, the glove compartment was the only place in the entire car where you could store things (with the exception of the trunk). In practice, its task is to filter the air that enters the car interior. Furthermore, it was not perceived as a drawer but as a compartment and some cars were not even equipped with one. Gradually we started to think of it as a drawer: A small lock was even installed. Hence the habit of integrating important objects safely from thieves was born.

In recent years, however, spaces for stowage and storage have multiplied and are truly found in every corner of the car. Today, cars can offer up to 40 compartments or even more to store different types of items. The glove compartment has also evolved. Now it is more spacious, with more compartments, an interior light… Of course, it is useful for storing important documents such as insurance, the registration document or the maintenance booklet. A first aid kit should also be included to provide quick help at any time and in any situation. Finally, you can insert the tire repair kit to repair any puncture. If a tire suddenly gets a flat, just ask a passerby for help.

But that’s not all, the new storage compartments have another hidden function that can be very useful for many drivers.

The glove compartment: A refrigerator in the car

When buying a new car, many people forget to consult the owner’s manual. And that’s a mistake, because it contains important instructions on how to use it. If you pay attention, you will know that the glove box is also cooled. At least most newer models offer this feature.

In fact, this system is based on air conditioning: When you start the car and drive off, the air is fed directly into the glove compartment. This function can therefore be very useful for keeping certain foods that defrost quickly, especially in hot weather (ice cream, ice cream cakes or chocolates), but also for keeping drinks or medicines fresh. A very useful function in case of particularly high temperatures and during long journeys. Of course, if your car doesn’t have this option, you can always resort to the good old insulated bag. Please note that some cars do not have this luggage cooling function.
