10 Pro Tips for a Successful Garden
Patience is a virtue that not everyone has when creating or redesigning a garden. To avoid unnecessary waiting times, there are some tips. These tips will get your garden ready faster.
If you plant them in the afternoon, by morning they will have grown to the sky.” Many people know the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, but unfortunately there is still no magic that can make our plants become giants overnight. Patience is always a virtue that we, especially as gardeners, must constantly practice, but we can be a little “crafty.”
1. Rushed privacy protection
Many garden owners would like to have a second seat in an intimate corner at the edge of the garden, but privacy is often still lacking. It takes too long for hedges or trees to reach a sufficient height. Ideally, you should buy ready-made mats or basket elements at a hardware store. They have a natural look and fit easily anywhere.
2. Flowering shrubs for all situations
When purchased, the bushes are usually quite short and it may take years for them to reach the desired height. The best size to purchase is between 100 and 150 centimeters. Additionally, there are species that are naturally in a hurry to grow. Among them are shrubs with simple but effective flowers, such as buddleia, forsythia, currant, aromatic jasmine or kolkwitzia. The disadvantage of fast-growing shrubs, which usually need pruning more frequently, is offset by their price: they are cheap because they can be grown quickly in the nursery.
3. Quick success in your garden thanks to rolled grass
If you’ve decided to create a lawn, you won’t want to wait long for a carpet of green. Rolled grass is certainly more expensive than self-seeded grass, but it is the fastest. Once the grass is ready, you should not waste time laying it, otherwise the grass will start to rot. The soil must first be loosened, leveled and pre-compacted with a lawn roller. Water well after rolling. It only takes one day to prepare the ground and have a walkable lawn. In comparison, seeded grass takes between four and six weeks to be mowed for the first time, depending on the weather. It will take several more weeks of mowing until the grass is very thick. Rolled grass is available as decorative grass, play grass or shade grass.
4. Easy stairs to make with your own hands
Tracks and embankments are accessed by garden stairs. If they are not used too frequently, the so-called protocol steps are sufficient. The installation does not require an excavator or the laborious transportation of stones. The steps are preformed at step height with a shovel. The vertical walls are then supported on wooden logs, which in turn are supported on stilts. The gravel on the steps prevents them from getting dirty when it rains.
5. Colorful flower beds in no time
Do you have a large bare area that you would like to transform into a sea of flowers as quickly as possible? With flower meadow mixes, your dream will come true in just four to six weeks. Before sowing in late April or early May, loosen the soil, sow the seeds, rake lightly, water and you’re done! However, when germinating, make sure the seed bed does not dry out. The first species bloom after just a month. The harvest takes place in June and September. Smaller areas can be decorated with summer annual flowers, which can be purchased in full bloom from May. In just a few hours you can create a colorful summer flower bed.
6. Fast Skies: climbing plants for quick success in the garden
An arbor or arbor is only effective with climbing plants. They help ensure that the intimate corner is not left empty. Annual climbing plants such as ipomoea (Ipomoea), bean (Phaseolus), sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) or nasturtium (Tropaeolum) grow and flower faster. For a quick start and abundant flowering, they need plenty of water and a regular supply of fertilizer. Perennial climbing plants such as hops (Humulus lupulus), honeysuckle or clematis replace the annual sky plants after the first season and ensure sustainable greenery.
7. Fast-growing hedges
Fast-growing hedges provide reliable privacy protection at the garden edge after a few years. In addition to the arborvitae (Thuja) and the false cypress (Chamaecyparis), there are also fast-growing deciduous hedges, such as the privet (Ligustrum vulgare) or the maple (Acer campestre). They are inexpensive, but require significant pruning when planting to ensure the densest planting possible. Garden centers also offer ready-made hedge elements with a height of about two meters, made from the most popular hedge plants.
8. Moving Flower Stars
The terrace flooring is finished, the new living room is already there, just missing a little floral decoration. Many of our garden plants, such as hydrangeas, also feel comfortable in large pots and enrich the sleeping area overnight with fresh greenery and large flowers. They can change locations as needed and remain in the pot all year round. Mediterranean plants in pots, such as oleander, angel’s trumpet or lavender, also promise magnificent flowers. However, they are not cold resistant and must be protected from frost in autumn.
9. The surface is sealed in a short time.
Ground cover plants are the best option for anyone who wants to plant large areas in an attractive way but does not want to use grass. There are species that cover the entire surface of the bed in a short time and smother weeds for a long time. Many species of stork birds only need a few years to develop densely green areas. Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla), golden strawberry (Waldsteinia ternata), red lisimachia (Lysimachia nummularia) or evergreen ivy are very suitable for planting under trees. Depending on the size and growth of the species, there should be between four and twelve plants per square meter.
10. A practical eye-catcher against bare walls
Using old fruit boxes, you can quickly set up flexible shelving in front of the walls of the garage, the house near the terrace or private walls. No nails or hammers needed. The boxes are placed side by side, either vertically or crosswise, so that each box is stable. The various compartments offer space for potted plants with flowers, decorations or practical garden utensils. The boxes can also be moved at any time and painted in different colors as desired.
