Complete guide to vertical gardening

With limited green spaces in urban environments, innovative solutions such as vertical farming are making waves. Imagine turning those discarded soda bottles into a charming vertical garden! This DIY vertical gardening technique, a collaboration between Brazilian design studio Rosenbaum and television producer Luciano Huck, is a fusion of sustainability and aesthetic appeal.

The story behind the concept

The Rosenbaum-Huck collaboration was brilliantly showcased on This Is Colossal. They ventured into several Brazilian homes, enlivening both indoor and outdoor spaces. Their vertical garden, featured in their 48th renovation project, caught a lot of attention. To share this sustainable wonder with the world, Rosenbaum has provided a practical guide. Originally in Portuguese, we have developed a translated version for our global readers.

Materials for the vertical garden

  • 2 liter plastic bottle, empty and clean
  • Scissors
  • Clothesline, twine or thread
  • Washers (two per bottle if using string or wire)
  • Topsoil
  • Seedlings (from herbs to vegetables)

Practical guide

  1. Drilling: Punch two holes in the bottom and two in the top of the bottle.
  2. Drainage: Create a small drainage hole at the bottom. Adequate drainage is essential to the health of the plant.
  3. Inserting the string: Pass your chosen string or thread through one hole, making sure it comes out of the other hole.
  4. Bottle Stability: Prevent the bottle from slipping on the rope by tying a strong knot or looping the knot around a washer.
  5. Installation: Stretch and fix the rope vertically on a wall. Your urban vertical garden is ready!

DIY self-regulating planting pots

Another great DIY project for greenery enthusiasts are self-regulating planting pots, especially useful if you often forget your watering schedules.

Materials:

  • Clear plastic containers (for example, used yogurt containers)
  • Cotton rope or old cloth strips
  • Topsoil
  • Seedlings

Steps:

  1. Container Preparation: Poke a small hole in the bottom of your plastic container.
  2. Creating the Fuse: Insert a cotton string or strip of cloth into the hole, making sure one end stays inside the container while the other dangles outside.
  3. Filling: Add potting soil and plant your seedling in the container.
  4. Watering Mechanism: Place the container on a tray of water. The dangling end of the rope/cloth will absorb the water, drawing it up into the container and ensuring the soil stays moist.

Closing

From repurposed soda bottles to self-driving mechanisms, the world of DIY gardening offers a multitude of sustainable and creative opportunities. These projects not only green our urban space, but also add a touch of unique decor to our homes. So, roll up your sleeves and immerse yourself in the joy of DIY gardening!
