HOW TO MAKE A DIY TERRARIUM WITH WHAT YOU HAVE AT HOME!

The beauty of a small treasure, a  miniature  garden  built  in a glass jar or bowl: this is the  terrarium  (also called  terrarium ).

Now a real  design element , the  terrarium  brings together  gardening  and  modeling : with it you can express all your  creativity  and  good taste .

Many, however, complain that building a  terrarium  is a long, tiring and difficult process.

Will it be true? Absolutely not!

You can make a terrarium in  minutes  if you have the right elements and know how to combine them. Let’s see together how to do it.

Warning : problems with plants? You can contact your trusted florist or gardener who will be ready to help you immediately.

What you will need

First of all, it is essential to get everything  you need  to create a beautiful  terrarium .

You will serve:

  • of the pliers
  • of draining soil
  • small rocks or gravel
  • of activated carbon
  • a glass bowl or jar
    moss (of the hypnum genus)

Regarding the choice of  bowl  or  jar , remember that the smaller the container, the more difficult it will be to create a terrarium.

If this is your first creation, choose a  container large  enough  to make the whole process easier.

Choose the right seedlings

The most difficult moment: choosing which  seedlings  will be planted in your terrarium.

In theory, many plants can be grown in a  terrarium , but if you don’t have much experience, choose   small succulents .

Small  cacti are perfect . Alternatively, you can choose plants that love  humid environments   such as  Fittonia ,  Ficus Pumila  and Helxine .

Clean the container

Before using it, it is important  to thoroughly clean  the container in which you will create your  terrarium .

This phase is important to avoid subsequent  contamination  that could alter the fragile  balance  of your  miniature garden .

To clean it best, use a mixture of  water  (about a liter) and  baking soda  (about 2 teaspoons), rubbing the inside of the container vigorously.

Then, rinse.

Prepare the base

Preparing the bottom of the terrarium is important to ensure the health and long life of the  plants  you place.

First, place  pebbles  or  gravel on the bottom , mixing them with a little  activated carbon  .

The ideal is to create a layer of approximately  2 cm .

Then add a thin layer of  moss . The moss will prevent the  soil  from slipping between the  pebbles , as well as absorbing excess water .

Finally, add the  soil  forming a layer of about  5-8 cm .

Planted and decorated

The time to put the  seedlings  in the  terrarium  has arrived! Dig small holes in the ground, using  tweezers .

Then, plant the plants.

Warning : handle the seedlings with  care , without pressing too much. Place them gently and then cover the  roots  with  soil .

Now you can decorate the  terrarium  with  small rocks  or miniature elements that you can buy around: houses, small elves or other. Have fun with your  imagination !

Take care of it

Obviously, the  terrarium  must be cared for like any plant.

Exposure  and  watering needs   change depending on the type of plants you have placed in the terrarium.

In general, however, you should keep it in a very  bright place , even if not in  direct sunlight   .

Also, remember that you have to water very rarely if it is an  open terrarium  , about  once a month  and with a very moderate amount of water.

If it is a  closed terrarium  , i.e. with a lid, you do not have to water.

Furthermore, in this second case, remember that the  terrarium  must be opened every now and then to allow a brief but necessary  exchange of air .
