Growing beans in pots: that’s why everyone does it now

Present since very ancient times in the European diet, as well as throughout the world, the broad bean is often a little underestimated when it comes to legumes  , despite being very rich in nutrients in a way not very different from the other members of the  legume family  . Broad beans also share some similar aspects to other legume variants, but in many ways they are even easier to grow in pots.

In the past, broad beans, considered trendy, were used both for the crop itself and were also planted in correspondence with other plant varieties because they were “expendable” as bait for parasites.

Several new diets, especially those of vegan origin, make extensive use of beans, and being a species that needs a fairly nutritious soil (“acquires” a lot from the land), many decide to grow them at home, perhaps directly. in pots

The broad bean is an annual plant that usually requires at least 4 months from sowing to sufficient growth of the pods, and despite being a winter species (many times we tend to plant it during the fall to have a harvest at the beginning of summer or the late spring), much depends on environmental conditions.

It is a very versatile plant that, however, does not tolerate soils that involve frequent waterlogging, so as far as possible it is better to use compact soils such as clay that can allow an adequate structure.

They need protection from strong gusts of wind and frost, even if the best growing temperature is 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. It is necessary to water very rarely in winter, while in summer it is a good idea to keep the soil slightly moist.

They do not need transplanting, as this becomes necessary in case of prohibitive environmental conditions, otherwise they require sufficient space and, if possible, a quantity of soil with good amounts of nitrogen.
