Milk in the Moka: why it’s worth trying

The Moka or coffee maker is a tool that is never missing in Italian homes. Even though it has often been replaced by electric machines with pods for making coffee, it still remains a must for the Italian breakfast.

The coffee machine as we know it was invented 30 years ago  and takes its name from the city of Moka which is a port located in Yemen. The town was famous for being a coffee producer. The coffee machine can be made of different materials:  aluminum , which makes it lighter, or  stainless steel , which makes it much more solid. This model stands out among the favorites of Italians all over the world as it is capable of producing a coffee with a unique taste and keeping it warm.

Moka aficionados absolutely must read this trick which we will explain below. In fact, not everyone knows that you can put milk in the Moka. It’s that extra touch to get a coffee like at the bar or, in some cases, even better.

How to do

Some people prefer to add milk to the Moka when the coffee has already boiled and the heat under the machine is off. Basically, they open the lid and pour the milk inside. Our suggestion, however, is different.

In fact, it requires milk to be placed at the base, instead of water.  Be careful  though. There are precautions to take. Milk, in fact, unlike water, can reach high temperatures in  a shorter time . The risk of it burning, therefore, is just around the corner.

Furthermore, when it rises through the filter and the coffee  the foam  that would be produced could be too much and alter the taste of the drink. Furthermore, milk, unlike water, could make the utensil much more dirty and require much more time to clean after use. In short, if you want to add milk instead of water you need to pay close attention when the Moka is on the heat.

If you don’t have the time to stay behind the coffee machine and you simply want to leave the Moka on the stove and do other things in the meantime, it’s better to add the milk later, just as we explained above. If you added sugar in addition to the milk, in a separate container, you could create the typical foam you get at the bar at home. In short, the milk in the Moka could turn breakfast around.
