To grow lettuce at home without seeds, there is a simple trick: don’t throw away the last part of the lettuce head, but plant it in water! This way, you can grow lettuce again and again from the part that usually gets thrown away. Let’s see how!

How to grow lettuce from leftovers?

  1. First, remove the larger outer leaves from the head of lettuce, then remove the bottom part of the head of lettuce with a knife and make a clean cut about 3cm from the bottom.
  2. At this point you have obtained the base of the lettuce heads. Set the leaves aside to prepare a delicious salad.
  3. Just get a bowl, glass or salad bowl to hold the entire bottom of the lettuce.
  4. Pour the necessary amount of water into the container so that the base of the lettuce is immersed for about a centimeter.
  5. Place the bottom part of the head of lettuce, which you would normally consider wasted, in a bowl of water.
  6. Place the  receiver   indoors near the window. Therefore, it will be exposed to light, but not direct sunlight.
  7. Write the start date of the “experiment” on the glass or bowl and remember to change the water once a day.

When and how to transfer lettuce to pots or to the ground?

After 15 days, you can already see that the head is well developed: the first root has formed and, above all, the first leaf in the center of the lettuce.

It is necessary to remove the outer leaves without damaging the roots. So, you can transplant the lettuce into an ordinary round pot filled with a mixture of humus and peat. Dig about two fingers deep, then fill the pot with soil.

After pouring it into the jar, immediately sprinkle a large quantity on the lettuce. If possible, enrich the soil with natural fertilizers. Expose the lettuce to the sun to make it grow gradually. Growing lettuce in pots on the balcony will be easy, and you can even invite your children to the experiment.
