Why you should try it
- Quick and Easy : This project is simple and can be completed in under an hour.
- Eco-Friendly : It’s a great way to recycle and reuse used plastic bottles.
- Aesthetic relationship : grouped together, they create a series of hanging planters with great visual impact, especially if green plastic bottles are used. However, any color or design can work.
Required materials :
- Used plastic bottles (2 to 4 litres)
- Cherry tomato seedlings
- Masking tape
- Punching
- Knife
- Strong twine
- Soil or compost
Step by step guide :
- Prepare the bottle : First, make sure the plastic bottles are clean and free of labels. With a knife, carefully cut the bottom of the bottle.
- Smooth the edges : Cutting may leave jagged edges. Seal them with tape. Next, punch four evenly spaced holes in the tape (and through the bottle), one on each side.
- Planting the seedling : Turn the bottle upside down, so that the mouth faces downwards. At this point, carefully insert the cherry tomato plant into the mouth of the bottle. Gently position the plant, making sure the clod of soil is spread out inside.
- Add potting soil : Fill the bottle three-quarters full with good quality potting soil or compost.
- Secure with twine : Thread the twine through the pre-punched holes, making sure it is secure. Tie it well.
- Choosing the right place : Hang the new planter in a sunny place. Cherry tomatoes thrive in sunlight.
Remember : your hanging cherry tomatoes will need constant watering. Check them regularly, making sure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged.
In conclusion :
This easy DIY project not only ensures you have fresh tomatoes on hand all summer long, but it’s also proof of the potential of recycled projects. Try and enjoy the fresh produce from your recycled planter!
