When we dedicate ourselves to cleaning the washing machine we rarely consider the filter, a component that serves to filter the water and allows good washing and rinsing of our clothes.
Precisely because it serves to filter, however, it tends to accumulate dirt and limescale . For this reason, it is important to clean it. But let’s face it, the idea of dropping water on the floors often inhibits us!
In this regard, today we will see together how to clean the washing machine filter without dropping too much water on the floor!
Before starting
Even before proceeding with cleaning the washing machine filter , let’s see together a series of precautions to proceed in total safety and to avoid letting all the water fall to the ground and wetting the floor .
We therefore recommend that you first unplug the appliance and turn off the water. After that, place a basin right under the filter to collect the water that will have to flow.
To make sure you don’t let the water fall to the floor, it would also be a good idea to place some rags under the basin and on the sides, so as to collect any splashes of water. At this point, let’s see together all the steps to take for cleaning!
Open the door
The first thing to do is identify the position of the filter, which is usually located at the back for top-loading washing machines, and at the bottom under the door for front-loading washing machines. Since, therefore, it is not always housed in the same position, we recommend that you consult the instruction booklet.
Once identified, open the door and you will notice a small black tube closed by a cap next to the filter . Then, open it and let all the water inside flow into the basin. Finally, close it again.
Remove the filter
Once the water has drained out, it’s time to thoroughly clean the filter and remove all the dirt inside. To do this, you will have to unscrew it by turning the knob counterclockwise and pulling it out.
If you are unable to remove it easily due to limescale encrustations, we suggest using a dry cloth to provide resistance.
At this point, rinse the filter under a jet of hot water to superficially eliminate all the dirt accumulated inside it. After that, proceed with a more thorough cleaning and soak it for about half an hour in a basin containing hot water and a glass of white wine vinegar.

Vinegar , in fact, boasts stain-removing, cleaning and anti-odor properties which can also remove any limescale and mold stains from this component and from the gasket ! Finally, rinse and dry it thoroughly.
Screw on the filter
Once the filter has been cleaned, it is also a good idea to proceed with cleaning the filter housing and make sure there are no objects or dirt residues before screwing it back on.
Then, roll up a cloth and insert it into the housing: once you have made sure that it is clean, screw the filter clockwise until it stops on its own. Finally, close the door and you’re done!
For deep cleaning
To avoid compromising the functionality of your washing machine, we suggest you repeat this operation once every three months. Furthermore, it would be a good idea to proceed with vacuum washing with vinegar or citric acid so as to remove all the dirt hidden in this appliance.
Equally important is the cleaning of the other components , such as the gasket, on which mold accumulates, in the drum and in the detergent drawer.
