Recovering sunburnt plants is possible and requires a few steps and a lot of patience. You will find them below, step by step.

Sunburned plants: why it happens

Upon returning from holidays or a few days away from home, did you find some of your plants burnt by the sun ? Unfortunately, it can happen. This happens due to environmental factors but also extreme environmental conditions. Furthermore, if exposed to full sun, some plants may not tolerate it well and react by burning, discoloring or, in the worst case scenario, dying.

In fact, each plant should be placed in specific sunlight conditions. Some plants are more resistant to sun and high temperatures than others. Excessive exposure to intense sunlight, therefore, can cause damage. Excessive ultraviolet radiation from the sun can also damage plant leaves, especially if they are sensitive.

With the scorching summers we are experiencing, not only humans and animals suffer but also plants. In fact, plants on the windowsill or balcony can overheat , especially if there is not enough humidity for cooling through transpiration. Environmental stresses, such as pollution or disease, can also contribute to plants burning.

Even if you find your plant sunburned, it doesn’t mean you have to throw it away right away . Instead, follow our advice, which we list below, to recover it.Taking care of burnt plants – imilanesi.nanopress.it

The steps to follow

The first step to take is to move the plant to the shade or partial shade. If your balcony is always sunny, at least during some hours of the day, you can also think about equipping yourself with temporary covers that can provide shade until the plant has recovered.

This way, you will protect it from solar radiation. Then, proceed by removing all the damaged leaves. Those that seem drier should be cut with scissors , avoiding tearing them. Only in this way will the plant be able to regenerate.

Then, proceed by giving water in moderation . In fact, excess could cause rotting of the roots. It will be the time to apply mulch, composed of dry leaves or straw, useful for maintaining soil humidity, reducing evaporation.

Last but not least step is nutrition with a slow-release balanced fertilizer . This will allow the plants to recover with the nutrients it needs.
