Digital Terrestrial, new switch off: everything is about to change | Mark this date

The switch off of Rai channels to digital terrestrial now seems like a soap opera. It was supposed to be done on January 10th but there is a new date that is currently circulating.Transition of Rai channels to digital terrestrial – Imialnesi.nanopress.it

Why the new postponement? This is only the latest, in fact the minister Adolfo Urso had already announced in August that a group of Rai channels would switch to DVB-T2 , but this time too it was not the case and this date has been postponed for months.

The transition of Rai channels to digital terrestrial

People are now skeptical when it comes to the transition of Rai channels to digital terrestrial . In reality, many are relieved because they still don’t have televisions enabled for this change at home.

This technology is no longer new, it is part of our life but for months there has been talk of the transition of a group of Rai channels to DVB-T2 , but without anything concrete.Rai digital terrestrial transition – Imilanesi.nanopress.it

Not even on January 10th, the date announced as the definitive one, was anything done and there was also an unexpected silence on the part of both Rai and the Ministry. No press release and no official statement , although the reason is clear to everyone.

Before announcing the new date, however, we would like to point out that on January 18, a few days ago, the board of directors announced that it had approved the new 2023-2028 service contract . However, the date that we will reveal in the next paragraph was not mentioned in the official press release, there are only rumors circulating in recent days.

The new date scheduled for the transition to digital terrestrial

As we said earlier, many think that the date has been moved again due to some events. These will take place in the summer months and for this reason the new appointment for the famous switch off should be September 1st 2024 .

In fact, between June and July there will be the European Football Championships in Germany and shortly after the Paris Olympics . The general director of Rai, Giampaolo Rossi , had already announced at the end of December 2023 the work with the Ministry to allow Italians to be able to watch these important events without too many complications.

In fact, let’s remember that not everyone has a smart TV enabled , in fact there are over 8 million who do not have a compatible device.

This is the justification given by Rai for postponing the transition, although it is not clear which and how many events of the Olympics and European Championships are actually broadcast on Rai.

The switch off has been postponed for 3 years now but publicly, we have been talking about this for 6 months. In this time, all the broadcasters have given up a large part of their frequencies to the State. This was then resold to telephone operators.

The situation is difficult at the moment, in fact there are the same broadcasters as before but with little transmission space and the solution would be to immediately switch everything to DVB-T2, which takes up less space and allows the transmission of many channels with the few frequencies remaining. However, the date continues to be postponed for the most disparate reasons and in fact even the date of September 1st should not be taken for granted .

Technology is moving forward but our country is lagging behind, to the point that Agcom was requested to intervene to protect broadcasters who work with traditional technology. These are being stormed by streaming platforms and the intervention – expected between this and next year – will change remote controls with mandatory physical buttons.
