It is important to proceed with the replanting operations using a width and depth of 30 or 40 centimeters that will be perfect to contain the long roots typical of our seedling. Then you have to position it so that it is protected from the wind. At the same time it should be constantly kissed by the sun and above all you should not water it too frequently. Clearly, even if it is a plant intended to last, it is always better to renew it every 3 – 4 years and fertilize it during the autumn period and then prune it only when the size of the plant is excessive.

Obviously during the first year the seedling will grow very slowly. However, it will be possible to use its first leaves to season our dishes. During next spring the plant will grow perfectly and much faster. In fact, even a single seedling can easily satisfy family consumption.

Sage can be harvested all year round due to its membership in the evergreen plant family. You can store the leaves in the refrigerator after wrapping them in a sheet of absorbent paper placed in a plastic bag. If the leaves are wet with olive oil, we can store them for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator. Otherwise we must use them within a period of just under a week.

It is important to protect our seedlings, especially during the first year, from the cold and frost of winter. You have to cover the base with straw, pieces of wood or bark, or you can simply bring it into the house. Then, to prevent the sage from being attacked by pests and rotting, we can create natural fungicides using baking soda and water.

As we have said, sage needs direct contact with the sun, which is why it loves temperate climates. If we plant sage in a garden we must avoid places full of shady areas. In the house, on the other hand, we must try not to place it towards the north side, thus placing it on a balcony or on the windowsill. Sage is not afraid of drought and is very resistant to cold if it is not prolonged for a long time. In addition to this, it prefers a calcareous substrate but it is possible to grow it in any soil. It does not tolerate clay soil and stagnant water.
