Wooden furniture, especially antique ones, usually gives off a strong old smell. It is a remedy that permanently eliminates bad odor.
How many times have you opened the closets and, despite the perfumers on the clothes and the drawers, you have smelled an unpleasant “old” smell? A stale odor that often tends to cling to clothing. Nothing particularly harmful if it were not so unpleasant, since it is a typical characteristic of wood to absorb, being a very porous material. However, it is not an insurmountable problem, in fact it is enough to use some small tricks to solve the problem.
Grandma’s remedy for bad smells in closets
We know that grandmother’s remedies have always been the most effective when it comes to cleaning. Thanks to the absence of specific products on the market and the few economic resources that families had, housewives of the past knew well how to solve problems related to the home with what they had at their disposal. In most cases the remedies included ingredients normally used in cooking, but also very useful in other areas.
In the case of wooden cabinets, to avoid bad odors, grandma’s best remedies involve the use of a very popular cleaning ingredient present in every home. We are talking about white vinegar, which combined with other ingredients can save us from unpleasant odors.
Widely used for the most varied solutions, let’s see how vinegar can help us inside the closets.
Lately we are rediscovering how useful vinegar is at home, as well as on our tables. Between cleaning, laundry, floors and bad odors, vinegar seems to be more effective than many products on the market. For scents in particular, its uses will surprise you.
Vinegar, the best ally of “grandmas”
For the first method, all you need is to get a container with warm water in which you will have to mix 200 ml of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda . Once the solution has become homogeneous, you can proceed with a soft cloth. Immerse it, wring it out a little and let it act on the affected areas by tapping and moistening them. After about 15 minutes, proceed to clean everything with a cloth moistened with water and dry well to avoid the future formation of mold and humidity.
You can also act alternatively with vinegar. In this case we will need some sheets of newspaper (preferably the opaque and absorbent ones from newspapers and not the glossy ones from magazines). Pour a liter of hot water
and 200 ml of white vinegar into a container .
At this point, take the sheets of newspaper and soak them in the solution. Once the paper has absorbed the solution well, let it drain and place it on a plate, avoiding direct contact with the wood. It is useful to place sheets of newspaper in the corners, even more than one if the spaces are large.
Another solution is to use a pot. That’s how it is! You need to fill a pot with warm water and half a glass of vinegar . The additional ingredient in this case is lemon juice, of which you should add half a glass to the mixture. Then you can place the bottle with the solution inside the cabinet and leave everything closed for a minimum of 12 hours . This method is excellent not only for covering up unpleasant odors but also and above all for eliminating mold.
