12 plants that will protect you from mosquitoes this summer


Summer is the season of fun, evenings outdoors, afternoons in the shade in your garden, but there is an intruder always ready to spoil your fun: the mosquito ! Summer and mosquitoes are an inseparable couple. The hot and humid season is conducive to the development of these insects. To keep mosquitoes away , there are chemical solutions, which are effective but which can harm humans and their environment. Fortunately, nature is there! Here are the mosquito repellent plants to have at home urgently to spend a summer without mosquitoes, bites or toxic insecticides!

1. Lemongrass

it is the anti-mosquito plant  par excellence. The repellent power of lemongrass is proven. Plant it in a planter on the edge of a window or on your terrace. Its lemony smell will effectively repel mosquitoes.

2. The maple tree

Aurone is an aromatic plant used as a condiment in cooking, with a lemony taste and smell. Fresh or dried, it is known for its powerful repellent powers against mosquitoes . Place it on a windowsill or dry a few branches and place them inside your home.

3. Peppermint

Mint is a plant which counts among its virtues that of repelling mosquitoes . In a pot, in a planter or rubbed on the skin, its strong odor will very effectively repel mosquitoes.

4. Lemon balm

Like mint, lemon balm is effective in repelling mosquitoes. It is an easy plant to grow in both sun and shade. Place pots of lemon balm in your garden or on the balcony. In addition to naturally repelling mosquitoes , it gives off a sweet citrus scent.

5. Geranium

Its leaves give off a lemongrass scent which effectively repels mosquitoes . Place it on the windowsill, or rub geranium leaves directly on your skin in the evening before going to bed.

6. Catnip or catnip

It is an aromatic plant which has a repellent essential oil . Easy to cultivate, it grows in gardens or in pots. Very popular with cats, you will have to plant it far from flowers, aromatic herbs or vegetables, otherwise your pet risks damaging them attracted by catnip.

7. Lavender

Lavender repels mosquitoes but at the same time attracts foraging insects such as  wasps , bees and bumblebees. It is therefore more interesting to use lavender essential oil to repel mosquitoes without attracting other insects.

8. Absinthe

Its smell is a perfect repellent for mosquitoes. You can grow it in the garden, or dry its flowers and leaves and place them inside the house.

9. Basil

This aromatic herb, very popular in cooking, is a powerful natural mosquito repellent . There are several types of basil, but the most effective mosquito repellents are lemon basil and cinnamon basil.

10. Rosemary

In addition to enhancing fish and lamb dishes, rosemary is also a very effective and easy-to-grow mosquito repellent.

11. Worry

Thanks to its richness in pyrethrin, marigold repels insects and mosquitoes and attracts pretty butterflies. Furthermore, its flower is very decorative and will be as beautiful as it is effective on the borders of your windows, or in a flower bed in your garden.

12. Thyme

This aromatic plant is also known for its repellent action on insects. Among all the varieties of thyme, lemon thyme acts by effectively repelling mosquitoes and  flies .

With these examples of insect repellent plants, you can avoid chemical insecticides that are toxic to human and animal health and the environment.

For maximum effectiveness, place plants strategically in places where you are most exposed to nuisances: on window sills on the balcony, terrace or in the garden so that when you go out, they can continue to repel mosquitoes. Water your mosquito repellent plants at night to intensify their scent and so the plant can stay moist all night.
