Yeast, used in cooking not only for leavening

Yeast  is an  indispensable ingredient in the kitchen, both to make our doughs rise and to give flavor and consistency to many vegetarian dishes.

It is a single-celled fungus that produces carbon dioxide during  fermentation . In the kitchen, it is mainly used to leaven bread, pizza, cakes and other baked goods. There are different types of yeast, such as brewer’s yeast  and wine yeast , each of which has a specific function depending on the dough to be made.

In addition to being an indispensable ingredient for our bread, it is also an excellent ally in the kitchen for those who follow a  vegetarian diet . The one commercially available in flakes, for example, can be used to add a savory flavor and crunchy texture to many dishes, such as  fried vegetables or vegetable meatballs.

Additionally,  nutritional yeast , also known as brewer’s yeast powder, is rich in protein and B vitamins and can be used as a seasoning or to make tasty protein drinks.

In summary, it is a  versatile  and multifunctional ingredient that deserves to be discovered and experimented with in the kitchen. Not only is it essential for our bread, but it can also add flavor and texture to many vegetarian dishes.

Rice and yeast, the recipe to try

Did you know that by combining  rice with yeast  you will obtain a dish that you will hardly forget? Here are the ingredients below:

  • 250 g of rice
  • 200 ml of water
  • 200 ml of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 sachet of yeast
  • 500 g of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of oil

Wash the  rice  until all the starch is removed. Then, in a pot, boil it until the water is completely absorbed. In a bowl, mix it now with the water, milk and sugar.

Now add the absolute protagonist of our recipe, the  yeast , and continue mixing. In another bowl, mix the flour and salt. Now pour the rice mixture into the bowl with the flour and mix well until you obtain a smooth mixture.

Add the oil and knead again. Transfer the dough to an oiled and floured pan and let it rise for about an hour in a warm, humid place. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Brush the surface of the bread with a little milk and bake for about 45-50 minutes or until the surface is golden. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool before serving.
