Pillow Mites – Here’s How to Get Rid of Them Right Away – The Guide

What happens to having mites in the house?

The  small arachnids  , better known as  mites,  are part of the arthropod family. They measure about a  quarter of a millimeter  and are found at home due to excess dust, but what causes them to proliferate is  human skin!

Of course, it does us no favors if  they leave excrement and eggs on mattresses, sheets and pillows,   putting us at risk of suffering from allergies and respiratory problems. Its presence can lead us to  sneeze  in bed. But other signs that suggest its presence are:  itchy skin, mouth, throat or  watery eyes  , nasal obstruction, swollen eyes and conjunctivitis. In more severe cases, mites also cause  asthma and eczema.

Eliminate mites with natural methods

First of all, we reiterate the fact that optimal hygiene plays a fundamental role in preventing the presence of these tiny ones. That is, vacuum frequently and change the sheets once a week.

Ventilating the room is another great step to discourage  the proliferation of mites  . It only takes a few minutes for fresh air to circulate in the room. Also, as soon as you get up, we suggest  not making the bed immediately,  but rather waiting for half an hour. When we finish with the  windows open,   we allow air to circulate over the duvets and sheets. In this way we prevent  humidity  and heat from stagnating under the sheets. Remember that it is also very important to change your pillowcases often! Exposing mattresses and bedding to the sun is another great step to reduce the presence of dust mites.

There are anti-mite products on the market to counteract the phenomenon, however, to ensure that the   bed is free of mites,  we have some suggestions that can help in the effort.

Baking soda and essential oils

Among the various products that we can use to clean mattresses, sheets and pillows, eliminating mites, we find  baking soda:  widely used for home cleaning thanks to its properties. Baking soda has a strong  disinfectant action,  it is completely natural and therefore safe to use without running any risk to our health.

It is another excellent solution to  reduce the proliferation of mites  . Here’s how: we can sprinkle  the entire surface  of the pillows and sheets with baking soda, letting it sit for  about two hours  before removing the residue with  a vacuum cleaner.

Another way to eliminate   bed  mites is to pour a couple tablespoons of baking soda into a spray bottle filled with water and lemon juice  . It is not enough to spray the mixture on the mattress, remembering however to let the surface dry well before making the bed.

Essential oils are also an excellent solution that helps  sanitize fabrics and surfaces  , especially  tea tree oil and lavender and eucalyptus oils  . To use them, simply dilute a few drops in a spray bottle filled with water and spray the liquid on mattresses, blankets, and pillows.

Whatever method you prefer to wash and clean pillows, sheets and mattresses, remember to dry the affected surfaces very well to avoid or worsen the mite problem. It is always best to keep away moisture and the risk of mites or mold proliferating.
