Lemon peels should never be thrown away. In fact, they can be used in the kitchen and beyond.

Highly appreciated on a culinary level, lemon peels can enrich desserts, such as those typical of the Amalfi tradition, or prepare tasty liqueurs such as limoncello. They can lend themselves to the creation, for example, of completely natural remedies that are finding a foothold not only in Italy. Let’s look at one.

Lemon peels in oil: an ancient remedy

Lemon peels can also be used to  create an oil, called oleolith. It is a completely natural remedy that serves to give vitality to the body but also unmatched well-being.

In particular, oleolite has its origins in ancient times and can be prepared not only with lemon peel but also using different vegetables to add to a vegetable oil. The lemon peels are left to marinate in the oil  . In this way, the benefits of the oils contained in the skins (or in the plants that you decide to let macerate) are taken advantage of, combined with the moisturizing and preservative power of extra virgin olive oil.

In fact, the oil fulfills a solvent function, capable of dissolving all the fat-soluble substances that plants are rich in. Extraction can take place when these elements macerate cold.

The properties of lemon and its aromas are combined with the mixture of antioxidant substances contained in  extra virgin olive oil, notoriously high in polyphenols.

The benefits that oil brings to our body can be many. In fact, it can be used as  a tonic  , it can  stimulate venous return  . Additionally, when used as a massage oil on wet extremities, circulation is reactivated.

How to prepare lemon oil: procedure and tips

Lemon oil can be considered as a massage oil with different functions, you can also mix salt to create an exfoliant. It can also refresh the eye contour, lightening dark circles and bags under the eyes, by allowing microcirculation. Your eyes and face will have clearer lines and a fresher appearance.

To prepare it you will need:

  • lemon peel in the amount of 100 grams
  • EVO oil, in the amount of 100 grams

As a rule of thumb, lemon peels should be exactly half the amount of oil, in proportion. Lemons must be cut very finely  , the skins must be preserved and the white part must be removed. The skins should be left to dry for about two days in the air or, better yet, in the sun.

The oil should be half of the peels obtained. The indicated dose is an example of preparation. If you want to increase the quantities you should always take into account the proportion of the two ingredients. Drying prevents the formation of mold. Then, the lemon peels will be placed in a previously sterilized glass container. At this point, you will pour  the oil that should completely cover the skins  . Shake the jar often so that the skins are always covered by the oil.

The jar should be stored  in a  cool, dark place for a month. Subsequently, the content will be filtered, the peels will be discarded and the rest of the content will be stored in a very clean glass container.
