Whether in the bedroom, on the balcony or in the flower bed, you should pay attention to these things for the sake of your plants.
1. Watering flowers at the wrong time
There are favorable times and less favorable times to water your flowers. In the middle of summer it is advisable to water plants early in the morning rather than at midday or at night. At night, the soil often becomes so hot with heat that water evaporates quickly and plants cannot absorb enough water. At midday the sun’s rays reflect off the water and, in the worst case, your plants could burn. In the middle of summer, the optimal time to water is between 3 and 5 in the morning. An automatic irrigation system can help here. Otherwise, you can water your flowers early in the morning with a clear conscience.
2. Water each plant the same way.
Not all plants need the same amount of water. Depending on the type of plant, decide how often and how much water you water or not. Basically, plants with large leaves need more water. However, find out beforehand about your plants’ water needs. If you no longer know where you are, it makes sense to place small pieces of paper in the pots on which you write down the watering time and amount of water.
Note: Yellow leaves are usually a sign that your plant is lacking water. However, brown spots on the edges of the leaves indicate that the plant in question has been overwatered.
3. Water the flowers with cold water.
Some flowers are very sensitive to temperature. Particularly sensitive flowers should therefore not be watered with a direct stream of ice water. Therefore, find out in advance about the care you want to give to your plants and it is better to water the most sensitive plants with stagnant water from the watering can.
4. Bet only on rain
Even if it has rained a lot, you should check to see if your plants need additional water. In fact, the amount of rain in summer is often not enough to adequately water thirsty plants. Sometimes rain only falls on the leaves of plants and does not even reach the ground. Plants that are close to the wall of the house sometimes do not receive any rain.
5. Bad maintenance routine
Commercially available plants usually come with a label with care instructions. These serve at least as a general guide. Therefore, a flower that needs watering twice a week should not be watered every day or at all. Not sure when you should water your plants? You can easily find out with a finger test or a pineapple test. Here we explain how the pineapple trick works.
6. Forgetting to take vacations
Is a trip planned? So never forget to hire someone to take care of your plants while you are away. If plants do not receive water for weeks, they will surely wilt. With a DIY bottled irrigation system, you can provide nutrients to your plants even during the holidays.
7. Don’t pay attention to stagnant water
If water remains in the pot after watering, stagnation may occur. Many plants then react with root rot and die. So make sure the water does not accumulate and pour it regularly into the saucers.
8. Forget evergreen balcony plants
Even hardy plants need water, something hobby gardeners tend to forget. Therefore, water evergreen plants from time to time, even at low temperatures, so that they do not die. It is true that plants need much less water than in spring or summer, but they should not be neglected completely.
Admit it, you’ve probably made a mistake or two when watering your flowers. But with these tips, your plants will grow and thrive in the future.
