Leave the garden without plants in winter

Many think that the winter season is synonymous with bitter cold and that, consequently,  it is not the ideal time to grow plants  in the vegetable garden or garden. But this is a serious mistake.

And for good reason: The winter season, which begins in late November and ends in March, is perfect for  planting rose bushes, fruit trees or even shrubs . But you need to grow them in well-drained and not very moist soil.

If you have a vegetable garden, also consider the possibility of planting alliums and greenhouse seedlings of some vegetables or aromatic herbs to harvest in spring.

Neglecting plant protection

During the winter, farmers often use  the mulching trick  to shelter plants and shrubs from the winter cold. However, other plant varieties are more temperamental and require  additional protection to survive .

For these cold climate plants, you will need:

  • Install a winter cover  to ensure foliage protection. However, remove it if you notice it is sunny and replace it at night to ensure good ventilation.
  • Place shelters  such as bells or tunnels.
  • Wrap the terracotta pots of plants that will remain outside with newspaper or bubble wrap. Then lift the pot with a wooden board to ensure better insulation.
  • Transfer the most fragile plants to a bright room with a temperature between 10 and 15°C.

Do not remove weeds from the garden

If you leave your garden abandoned because it’s winter, you’re making  a big mistake.  Even if you prefer to stay warm by the fireplace, you need  to weed the garden .

To do this, take gloves and a hoe and start removing weeds from the garden. Collect the leaves and remove the moss.
