BURY ONIONS IN A GLASS FULL OF SOIL: WHAT HAPPENS 7 DAYS LATER

If you want to give new life to your garden, bury the onions inside a glass with soil. Here’s what happens.

Onions  , one of the  basic ingredients  of the  recipes  most loved by Italians. Growing them at  home , however, seems to many to be an  unattainable challenge , especially because many do not have  adequate space  to do so. However, there is  good news  : there is a  trick  that allows you to  grow onions  directly inside your home, even in  tiny spaces , like a  plastic cup .

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF ONIONS

Onions   are  very popular vegetables in Italy, where we  find them in different  varieties :  red, white, golden  and so on. In addition to being  versatile and tasty , however, onions also boast particular  benefits  for our  health .

Raw onions, for   starters, are  low-calorie  and contain   essential  micronutrients such as B vitamins, phosphorus and potassium . In addition, they contain a good amount of  fibre , including  fructans , useful for the health  of the gastrointestinal system . But not only that: onions are rich in  vitamin C,  essential for the synthesis of elements such as  hormones and proteins , as well as for the health of the  immune system .

In addition to these  elements  that we have listed briefly, onions are foods rich in  folic acid, phosphorus, calcium, vitamin B6 and potassium . This means that they act beneficially in different areas of our  body . For example, they have an  antimicrobial action  that allows you to better fight  bacterial infections  from  Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Helicobacter pylori.

Furthermore, onions are able to lower  blood   sugar levels , with beneficial effects on blood sugar . Indeed, a 2010 study   showed that consuming  100 grams of raw red onions  every day is able to improve the glycemic levels of patients suffering from  diabetes . A real  panacea  for your health!

How to Plant Onions in a Plastic Cup

How is it possible for  onion plants  to grow inside  plastic cups ? There are several  videos on Youtube  in which  botanical experts  illustrate this trick. The procedure to follow is  quick and simple , and allows you to start seeing results after the  first 7 days of cultivation.

As for the  materials , we will need a  transparent plastic glass , or alternatively a  vase . Additionally, we will need a  box cutter  or  screwdriver , some  soil ,  onions  and a  knife .

To start, we cut the onions flat, removing the  cap  but not the  roots , which will be  fundamental  for what we are going to do. Then we create small  holes on the bottom and walls  of the pots and fill them with  soil . In doing this, however, we leave a little  space  between the  soil  and the  edge of the pot , about a couple of centimeters.

Once this is done, we shape the  surface of the soil  with our fingers so as to create a small  ditch  in the center, inside which we will bury an  onion . As regards the  position  of the onion, it is good to remember that it must be placed  with the roots downwards.  Finally, we place the pots  inside containers or saucers , and  water  approximately every two days.

By continuing to water we will notice the first  green leaves  appear after about  7 days , a good sign for the growth of our  onion plants !
