Strawberries full of worms and insects: how to disinfect them easily at no cost

With this simple method it is possible to thoroughly clean and sanitize the strawberries: worms and insects will no longer be a problem.

The  spring season  has finally arrived, although with some doubts. The month of April has had several ups and downs in terms of weather, but for a few days  the temperatures have become more pleasant  and the sun has begun to appear in all areas of Italy. With the arrival of spring, the real one, many also go in search of  seasonal fruit  : specifically, we go on the hunt for  strawberries  , which begin to replace purely autumn and winter fruits such as apples and pears . However, those with a sweet tooth should be careful when preparing to eat this tasty fruit.

Cleaning strawberries, the quick and easy method: this is how

Strawberries, in fact,  can be full of insects  , so you should first wash them well to avoid any risk. The solution that immediately comes to mind is to rely on classic disinfectants that can be easily found in stores, but the advice is always to adopt  natural methods  to better disinfect strawberries. One of these methods allows you to clean them perfectly and not leave traces of insects.

The first thing to do is take a baking dish and  fill it with water  , adding coarse salt so that it dissolves in the water. Once this operation is completed, add  a little white vinegar  to the solution. The appropriate amount depends on the number of strawberries to be washed: the more there are, the more white vinegar should be added. The next step is to start taking a few strawberries and place them in the pan with the water mixed with coarse salt and white vinegar. Then they should soak for about ten minutes.

After this time, rinse the strawberries with the help of the solution contained in the baking dish. You just have to pay attention to notice after a few minutes the presence of  white worms  , of microscopic dimensions. This is not a surprising aspect, given that strawberries are one of the ‘dirtiest’ fruits, so they must be properly sanitized. When washing the strawberries carefully with this method, we will notice that the solution  will soon take on a darker color  : this happens because we are cleaning them from worms and all insects.

For complete cleaning it is best to remove the stem

Once this is done, we are going to look for  another metal container  , filling it with water. We transfer the strawberries to this container, obviously leaving the dirty water in the plate. If we have rinsed the fruit well,  the dirty water will be full of insects and worms  that will no longer be a problem for the strawberries and (above all) for our body.

The last ‘step’ to be sure to remove all the dirt is  to remove the stem  from each fruit. The stem, in fact, is one of the parts where insects are most concentrated and even a thorough wash may not eliminate them completely. Strawberries can be  eaten immediately or used for cakes, desserts  or cocktails.
