Heating at no cost, without a radiator on day and night, seems impossible, but it is a reality that is becoming increasingly popular! Grandmothers’ old remedies are back in fashion, to counteract high energy prices and safeguard the family pocket.
Bill increases are the real nightmare of Italians and cushioning them as much as possible is a generalized categorical imperative. Try these clever methods and you’ll find just the right warmth without breaking the bank!
Curious? Begin!
Heating without a radiator: when it’s cold, try grandma’s tricks!
Let’s start with the basics: It may seem trivial, but the first thing to do is seal the windows as much as possible. In fact, if they are outdated or malfunctioning, they allow cold air to pass through and penetrate the rooms and bones. Equip yourself with the classic snakes made of foam-filled fabric, the ones you saw at grandma’s house! If you don’t have any, simply roll up a terry towel to insulate your windows and doors.
Then, make the most of the natural light possible: in the morning, open the blinds, raise the blinds and widen the curtains. The sun’s rays will warm the room and during the first part of the day you can keep the radiators off.
Try, then, salt sock is a remedy handed down from time immemorial. In ancient times, it was already customary to make wool socks to protect the feet from the cold, but not only. They were also used for warmth. Here’s how to resume this effective, but low-cost habit.
Toast some coarse salt in a non-stick pan, then with a spoon or funnel transfer it into a wool or plush sock and hold it at your side to warm your hands, belly or back. Salt also absorbs moisture. If you suffer from sinusitis, place the sock on your forehead, it will speed up healing and relieve pain!
A similar trick is to fill a plastic bottle with hot water (not boiling, otherwise it will warp). Heat a liter of water in a pan, then transfer it with a funnel to a bottle and keep it next to you to warm it when you are cold.
Or, prepare a fragrant infusion. Put a little water in a saucepan, add 4 or 5 bay leaves and bring to a boil. Pour everything into a glass jar. The resulting steam will perfume the air and give it a healthy warmth. If you love citrus aromas, use orange or lemon peels, if you prefer warmer and more intense ones, use a cinnamon stick.
And before bed, for a really cozy bed without spending a fortune on heating devices, reach for the hot hair dryer. Wipe it over your sheets and pillow, blankets and comforter, then place it under your duvet and enjoy a night of refreshing warmth.
Simple, right?
